This is my method and will give you MEDIUM TENSION stringing. I make no claims that it's suitable for every doll you may have on hand, nor that I'm an expert in such things, people asked me, I put it up.

***EDITED TO ADD***
[link] A link to my journal explaining my methods on elastic size and the science behind choosing it. Hopefully that'll help!

This was actually done a couple of years back for some friends, but of late, I'm getting asked a lot again, so here ya go. Stringing...not the dark art many would have you believe, just a simple matter of tension and knowing the resin you own.

For the record, the victim is my DIM Robel/SDF hybrid and yes, I had to put a mature warning on it because there's a naked doll in it and God forbid anyone see resin peen without knowing it's there.

Also...excuse the typo's and such, it was done so long ago I couldn't be arsed to go in and change it all for a few missed words!

"God forbid anyone see resin peen without knowing it's there."

XDDD Thank you! Seriously, I like to hope that DOLL nudity isn't a big deal to most people...

A little more on topic, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for actually telling people how MUCH elastic to use! I'm still pretty new to BJDs, and have had absolutely zero luck trying to figure out how much elastic to use when I'm restringing a predictably loose new-from-ResinSoul doll with much thicker elastic in the hopes it will actually let her stand up.

(Oh noes, I'm a n00b AND I only have RS/BBB dolls! Quick, someone flame me!)

HA...yessss...you'd be surprised...

You are very welcome and I'm glad it was of use to you :D It is a tricky one to guess and often you end up tweaking it a bit depending on the doll and what you want it to do, but as a rough guide, the dry fit is the best option :)

(Not all of us care, don't worry! I own all sorts of dolls, RS included, and really don't *snort*)

I was terrified of restringing, but I just bit the bullet and had my first ever attempt, your tutorial is a god send!
Thankyou so much for this :D (Although, I may have to redo the arms, they are a little kicky!)

This method is tried and true. Another way to do it if you're just adjusting the tension in the doll and don't want to have to restring the entire thing is this:

Remove the head. Using an S-hook tool or the pliers mentioned here, pull the string up through the neck until you can't pull it any further. You can knot the elastic in the new position and then trim off the excess and put the head back on. This is a quick and dirty method but it does great for tightening dolls whose elastic has gotten a little older and stretched after long periods of time.

Ahh yes, the ole yank and knot! :D Tbh, I prefer not to use that method for three reasons
a.) It takes ages for the elastic to resettle into a useable tension and tends to cause uneccessary dragging on it over rough resin and s-hooks in the process,
b.) Even on medium tension, that rips the crap out of your hands
c.) If the elastic's slackened enough over time to become THAT loose, there's no way it's going to be up to what I want so I take it out and entirely restring.

But I am incredibly picky about the posability of my dolls, so if that method works for people, YAY!

YAYS! Go you :D You do have to give it a good yank, but once it's settled and all hooked up, it'll level off again and you should have really good tension that'll stand up to a year or so of heavy play :D

Silly question, but does the elastic have any GIVE left in it when it's slack? If it's got no stretch left due to age or what have you, you can tighten it all you like and will get nowhere!

Yes, she's fairly new, I've only had her about a year and restrung her once, so it's still stretchy. But her legs are tight and her arms are a bit floppy.

Have you tried binding her legs bent and leaving her over night a few times? Sometimes that can help when you need them tight, but they still kick. It usually does the trick with CP bodies and hey, no harm no foul if it doesn't work eh!

Noe, not a dark art, LOL My biggest problem is getting the right amount of string to start with.. too much is a waste and not enough is as well, so your 'dry fit' thing is very helpful to me.

oh good god you make it look so easy! i've restrung travis like two times already (boob sandings and what not) and i still kinda struggled to pull the damn elastic in (i mean the whole process of restringing AREN'T AS BAD as before but with this tutorial it would definitely be easier next time ; u ; )

I think, from my appalling memory, that Travis is a Zaoll mod, right? In which case it's slightly different because of the faceplate system anyway tbh. You need marginally shorter elastic and the body knot has to be in the upper torso, not the head, or the faceplates never sit right and you lose movement on the head generally...but...YAY for it hopefully helping :D

By the way, what is the thickness of the elastic you use for your 60-cm dolls?
Reply
:iconlulufae:
lulufae Featured By Owner May 7, 2011
It depends on the doll tbh, a Delf, for instance is relatively light, so I'll put them on a 4.0/4.5, that's enough oomph to hold them solid without making them snappy because I really loathe tightly strung dolls! (The TENSION on the resin when it's strung too tight just makes me cringe, they feel like they're vibratingly close to explosion.) If you're stringing something on the smaller side of SD, you can go down to about a 3.5 if the resin weight isn't too much for the elastic to carry. Basically, it's about using the correct combination of weight vs the gauge of elastic so that when teamed together, you reach perfect tension with the strength to hold a pose, without being a snappy mess. It's worth experimenting with it, after a while you can just sort've TELL what doll needs what size tbh. Maybe I should write all of this out...hmm

Thank you for taking the time to give such an in-depth response. My main problem was I had no idea how to gague the thickness of the string already in my dolls to know what to order/upsize/etc. I have so many varying thicknesses in the dolls, and it seems like each body came with a different size of elastic, so I was at a loss of where to start. This definitely helps. Again, thank you.

I know what you mean, every company ships them out slightly differently and it's always a bit of a gamble whether they've done it correctly. It's entirely why I just remove all stringing when a doll arrives and re-do it my way tbh! I don't know if you've seen it or not, but I thought your question was worth exploring a bit more and wrote a journal on my methods of choosing elastics: [link]

Hope that helps too and good luck! :)

Ah, thank you for this :)
My Iplehouse boy is due for a restringing (it's been 3 years, poor soul) and I haven't restrung a doll in aaaages, so this'll really help me get the kind of tension I want!

Out of interest, since I'm on the hunt for some good elastic to use as a default for my group, do you have a preferred make you use?

They do a whole range of sizes, it's by far the best elastic I've ever used and is usually far better than whatever the company tossed into the doll before shipping tbh! It's why I strip out any doll that arrives to me immediately and re-string them my way, on my elastics.

I might have to try re-stringing all my guys with coolcats elastic then and see how they fare. Who knows, they might actually be able to stand for once! :)
